You simply •  need to know how to get started...

•  You'll need basic computer skills
•  You'll need access to a computer
•  You'll need access to the Internet
•  Find a good web designer
•  Register a domain and find a good web host!

What's Important?

Domains There are many good reasons to build a website but it is important that your own goals are clear. Your objectives should drive the content and the design of your site. Many people build home pages as a hobby, purely for their own personal development. Others build websites to promote their business, social and/or cultural objectives. Since developing a website is an investment to an extent, it is important to have at least some general knowledge related to web development in order to improve your chances of success.

There is also potential for generating income from the web pages you develop. This is done by publishing interesting content that attracts large numbers of visitors. You can then allocate space on your web pages for third-party advertising as one example of generating income. Judging by the large number of websites that contain little useful content, it would appear that many web developers have not clearly defined their objectives!

Where Can I Find A Good Web Designer?

Everybody wants a professional looking website that will help generate more business. But how do you find someone who can create that perfect site for you? We have outline some important points to consider:

1)   Check out the web design agency's (or sole designer's) portfolio - does it impress you and is the look and feel of their designs similar to something you might want? Are the samples sufficiently varied from one another or do they all look the same?

2)   Be sure you have a clear understanding of the pricing. You can always call to get a free quote...
(Be weary of desginers charging by the hour unless it's for specific or isolated work)

3)   If you are planning regular updates and cannot afford to employ someone to do them for you, ask to have the site designed to an easily-editable template. This may cost more initially, but should allow a novice to update the content easily.

4)   Don't be impressed by web designers that have many icons on their site showing awards they have won. There are literally 100's of bush league awards available for web sites - many of them only require that you link to them or provide your contact details to win an 'award'. The good designers aren't reliant on showcasing awards to get business, they let their work do the talking.
